PRK laser eye surgery is designed to help improve vision while reducing the need for glasses or contacts. This surgical procedure is used to treat nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism by reshaping the cornea. Before moving forward with surgery, we will want to meet with you to determine that you’re a good candidate for the procedure. The surgery itself takes around 10 minutes. Your doctor will use numbing drops before using a laser, brush, or blade to remove the outer portion of the cornea, referred to as the epithelium. Your cornea will be reshaped based on your eye measurements. This procedure achieves the same benefits as LASIK and is ideal for those with thin corneas.

After your procedure, it’s advisable to have someone drive you home, or consider staying overnight in a nearby hotel to rest before your follow-up appointment the next day.

Lastly, consider the convenience of follow-up care, as you’ll need to return for a post-operative visit the day after your surgery.
Chicago’s seasonal weather can play a role in planning your LASIK surgery. While the procedure itself is performed indoors and is not weather-dependent, consider how winter snow or summer storms might affect your travel plans from Hickory Hills to downtown Chicago.
During winter, give yourself extra time to drive or take public transportation, as snow and ice can lead to delays. In the summer, while heat and humidity don’t affect LASIK recovery (1) we recommend staying hydrated before your procedure. Regardless of the season, our team at Kraff Eye Institute is here to help you plan your visit and ensure a smooth experience.
