LASIK Eye Surgery Procedure Case Study

September 29, 2021

LASIK surgery is one of the most popular vision-correction surgeries to consider. LASIK helps reshape the focusing elements in your eyes and is ideal for correcting nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism.

Many patients state LASIK as a life-changing procedure. Here’s a myopia case study featuring a patient from the Kraff Eye Institute.

LASIK Patient Information and Diagnosis

Our LASIK case study focuses on Sophia. Sophia had worked at the Kraff Eye Institute for a few months before deciding to see if she’d be a good candidate for LASER eye surgery. As a 21-year-old with hopes of one day becoming a nurse, she was frustrated by her poor vision and constantly having to rely on glasses or contact lenses to get through the day. Sophia had worn contacts since the age of 11 and found that although they helped her to see, it made playing volleyball and tennis more of a hassle; two activities she loved doing. After consulting with Dr. Kraff, he found Sophia to be an excellent candidate for eye surgery for nearsightedness.

Pre-operatively, Sophia’s uncorrected vision was 20/200. Sophia was found to have myopia with slight astigmatism in each eye. Her right eye was measured at -3.25 with a half diopter of astigmatism, and her left eye was a -3.75 with three-quarters of a diopter of astigmatism.

Although she was a little nervous on the day of surgery, Sophia knew she was in great hands with Dr. Kraff and his world-class team. As a result of having seen Dr. Kraff perform surgery many times, Sophia went into her myopia LASIK surgery extremely excited and was anticipating great results.

LASIK Procedure and Treatment Recommendations

Based on numerous factors, such as level of correction, the thickness of her corneas, and corneal shapes, Sophia was found to be a good candidate for a LASIK procedure. In this LASIK eye surgery case study, we will walk you through what Sophia experienced on the day of her surgery. LASIK for myopia is one of the most popular treatments performed in the country. LASIK surgery is essentially a two-step process. Step one uses a LASER to put energy in the cornea to create a thin flap on the surface of the eye. Sophia was given several sets of topical numbing drops prior to surgery to help create a pain-free experience. While the flap was being created, she did experience pressure, but it only lasted about 30 seconds for each eye.

Once the flap was created, Sophia was brought into the main laser room and was set up for the 2nd part of the surgery. A small lid speculum was used so that Sophia couldn’t blink during her surgery. Because her eyes were numbed, Sophia didn’t even realize that she wasn’t blinking. Once inserted, Dr. Kraff then used surgical instruments to gently lift the flap and move it over temporarily. Next, Dr. Kraff used the LASER to target specific areas on the cornea to remove tissue. By removing a microscopic amount of tissue from the cornea, the light that passes through the eye can focus correctly on the retina (the sensory tissue at the back of the eye). The LASER treatment was specific to Sophia’s exact measurements for each eye. Prior to surgery, measurements were taken using the iDesign 2.0 software. This software helps to customize each treatment for each patient’s unique structural characteristics. Upon completion of the laser treatment, which only lasted for a matter of seconds and during which Sophia felt no pain or discomfort, the flap was then realigned over the eye and positioned back into place. Dr. Kraff then did the same steps for the 2nd eye.

After surgery Sophia was taken into a post-op room where all her instructions for post-care were discussed. Dr. Kraff then did his final check and Sophia, like all LASIK patients, was sent home to rest.

LASIK Follow Up Appointments

Within 24 hours Sophia was seen for a quick 1-day LASIK follow-up. By this time, all her discomfort had gone away and she was already seeing 20/20! Over the next couple of months, Sophia was seen for a handful of quick follow-up appointments and was continued to be amazed by her new vision! Sophia found her LASIK surgery recovery to be “quick and easy and totally worth it!”

LASIK Eye Surgery Recovery and Results

Dr. Kraff and his professional staff did not disappoint. Only one day after surgery and Sophia was already thrilled with her results. Sophia stated that she felt almost no discomfort during the first several hours of initial healing and the only side effect she experienced was slight redness in her eyes which is a normal part of the healing process. As time went on, the redness went away, and to this day, Sophia continues to marvel at her life free from wearing glasses or contact lenses.

Sophia is excited to experience the world in an entirely new way, thanks to Dr. Kraff!
