Dr. Colman R. Kraff, MD

Committed to advancing new technologies in the field of ophthalmology, Dr. Colman Kraff helped to pioneer laser vision correction. In February of 1991, as part of a five-site, U.S., FDA clinical trial team, Dr. Kraff successfully performed the first excimer laser procedures in the Chicagoland area using the VISX Excimer Laser.

Since that time, Dr. Kraff and the Kraff Eye Institute have devoted their practice to specializing in laser vision correction. The Kraff Eye Institute has been and continues to be the lead U.S. investigative site for all VISX LASIK FDA clinical trials, performing the very first hyperopic LASIK and Wavefront-guided custom treatments in this country.

Dr. Kraff actively lectures and teaches doctors throughout the world and is one of three primary physician excimer laser trainers in the United States.

What type of laser do you use? Is your laser FDA approved?

The Kraff Eye Institute offers the most progressive technology in Refractive Surgery. Dr. Kraff uses the Johnson & Johnson VISX Star S4 IR Laser system to help deliver amazing results! This laser is FDA-approved, which means the technology has undergone rigorous testing to determine safety and effectiveness.

What percentage of patients do you see that aren’t good candidates for surgery?

We turn away between 10% to 20% of consultations because they do not fall safely within treatable perimeters for surgery. Dr. Kraff’s main concern is always the safety of his patients and in order for him to recommend surgery, you will need to fall well within safety perimeters.

Will the doctor be performing my pre-operative and follow-up examinations?

Dr. Kraff will be involved with your eye care every step of the way. We do offer patients the option of working with some of our affiliated optometrists throughout the Chicagoland area if that is more convenient for them. We also have optometrists in Indiana and Wisconsin that we arrange for you to work with. If a patient chooses to comanage with one of our outside doctors, that doctor will send your exam to Dr. Kraff for review.
